The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF) is seeking to fill the role of Health Science Writer.
DTHF is a registered nonprofit focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in southern Africa.
Responsibilities
- Produce articles (both journal and media) for publication in print and online, according to agreed style, and keeping to strict deadlines
- Read and research specialist media and literature, e.g., scientific papers, company reports, newspapers, magazines and journals, press releases and internet resources
- Conduct academic reference searches
- Review and amend work in response to feedback on request
- Input into selecting appropriate artwork to accompany articles
- Occasionally read page proofs from printers and check colour proofs
- Provide support for grant writing
- Write scientific papers, reports, and other documents based on data analysis and interpretation
- Create reports based on research findings and translate them into layman’s terms
- Review studies to ensure that research methods were conducted properly
- Write articles about research findings for scientific journals in a structured and professional manner
- Review research proposals to determine if they are viable, and conduct research as necessary, to support the proposal
- Edit reports for grammar, style, and tone to ensure that they are suitable for publication
- Prepare a report of findings
- Develop an understanding of the target audience for each project and tailor content accordingly
Requirements
- Postgraduate degree in Health Sciences
- Five years, minimum, of science writing experience
- Ability to distil complex information to a level that the general public can understand
- Strong interest in science
- Sound understanding of standard computer programmes
- Verifiable evidence of technical writing skills and extensive research
- Ability to simplify complex topics and communicate complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand
