Zimbabwe: Welthungerhilfe Conducts WASH Training

Welthungerhilfe Zimbabwe has conducted water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) training for selected schoolteachers and students in the country.

Development Diaries reports that the humanitarian organisation carried out this activity in partnership with Charitywater and the Zimbabwean government.

It is understood that many communities in rural Zimbabwe lack access to clean water, severely impacting health, education, and livelihoods.

‘Thanks to @charitywater [and] government’s support, we’ve provided #WASH training [and] water to schools like Nyamaropa Secondary in Shamva’, Welthungerhilfe tweeted on its X social media platform.

Welthungerhilfe noted that the rural WASH project secured a borehole and established a piped water scheme which now provides a reliable source of clean water for schoolchildren.

A 2021 United Nations sustainable development goals (SDG) report on Zimbabwe showed that 67.9 percent of households in rural areas lack access to better sources of drinking water, compared to 97.3 percent of those in urban areas.

The report further revealed that the ability of Zimbabweans to pay for WASH services has been significantly impacted by inflation.
