Zimbabwe: Nhaka Foundation Targets Primary Schools

Nhaka Foundation, a Zimbabwe-based non-governmental organisation has developed and implemented a series of interventions designed to bridge the gap between government’s capabilities and government’s policies with respect to Early Childhood Development (ECD) programming in primary schools. The organisation also provides access to education, basic health care and daily sustenance for the orphaned and vulnerable children in the communities it serves.

The Chief Executive Officer of Nhaka Foundation, Patrick Makokoro, stated that ‘Nhaka Foundation has managed to partner with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to work with rural area primary schools, parents and caregivers to create Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres through the renovation of over 32 dilapidated classrooms’.

The organisation has worked with the families and members of communities hence fostering a sense of community ownership and building sustainability into its initiatives. The foundation is involved in classroom and playground renovation, parenting education, teacher training, feeding programmes and health assessments. The long-term goals of the foundation, according to its Chief Executive Officer, are resource mobilisation, enhancing  the foundation’s visibility and influencing policy through evidence-based advocacy.
