The African Fertiliser and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) and African Green Resources have teamed up to provide farmers in Zambia with resources to bolster crop production as the country battles to recover from the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Zambia’s GDP is likely to decrease by 2.6 percent this year as a result of the pandemic, according to the country’s finance ministry.
In response to the economic challenges, the Zambian government, Development Diaries learnt, passed a $438 million stimulus package directed toward social services and businesses that have been severely affected by the global recession.
Zambian economic downturn, according to reports, has also had a severe impact on rural farmers as the lockdown in Zambia limited the amount of money urban residents send back to their families living in rural areas.
Additionally, many transportation systems have entirely shut down, making it impossible for small-scale farmers to distribute their products to urban markets and to acquire adequate supplies to have a successful harvest.
With the AFAP and African Green Resources partnership, farmers in the southern African country can be hopeful.
The partnership is expected to secure credit-lines for farmers to purchase supplies as well as ensure effective fertiliser training.
