Yobe Killings: Army Needs to Investigate Human Rights Violation

Yobe killings

The reported actions of Nigerian soldiers in response to civilian protests in Yobe State, northeast Nigeria, are deeply disturbing and utterly condemnable.

Development Diaries reports that three people were killed while others were injured after a Nigerian army patrol vehicle hit a commercial tricycle driver, causing injuries to the driver and his passengers.

According to a Channels TV report, a protest was staged by the association of tricycle drivers after the incident, blocking the main road leading to Gashua.

This angered the army personnel, who, in return, began shooting sporadically, injuring and killing some protesters.

This action is deeply disturbing and utterly condemnable.

The primary duty of the armed forces is to protect and serve their citizens, yet the use of lethal force against peaceful demonstrators flies in the face of this fundamental principle.

The killing of civilians exercising their right to protest violates basic human rights and also undermines the fabric of democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.

The response of the soldiers demonstrates a blatant disregard for human life and basic decency. Instead of addressing the concerns of the citizens they have sworn to protect, they chose to respond with violence, further escalating tensions.

Such actions only end up betraying the trust placed in the military by Nigerian citizens.

Development Diaries calls on the Nigerian army to investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable to the full extent of the law.
