What President-Elect Tinubu Promised Nigerians

As congratulatory messages have begun to pour in for Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, coupled with his supporters’ jubilation over his victory, what should Nigerians expect from him as president?

Development Diaries reports that Tinubu, during his presidential campaign, released an 80-page policy document that highlighted an eight-point agenda.

According to the manifesto, his administration will foster a new society based on shared prosperity, tolerance, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to treating each citizen with equal respect and due regard.

Economy

Tinubu promised sufficient jobs for the youths, with decent wages. He also promised to boost manufacturing, ensuring that Nigeria shall be known as a nation of creators, not just consumers.

He also vowed to transform Nigeria into an enviable country with ‘a robust economy’.

Security

Tinubu promised to improve security by decentralising the policing of the country and creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs simultaneously.

Electricity

The president-elect also promised that his administration will generate, transmit and distribute sufficient, affordable electricity to Nigerians.

Education

In several campaign speeches, he promised educational reforms, from basic to tertiary level, saying he would introduce student loans.

Despite the outgoing government’s claim of having spent over N6 trillion on education in the last six years, the challenges facing the sector persist.

Nigeria’s education sector still grapples with issues like inadequate funding, deplorable infrastructure, low remuneration of teachers amongst others.

Also, the issue of out-of-school children is still a problem, which the education minister, Adamu Adamu, has failed to tackle since 2015.

Healthcare

The president-elect made a promise to introduce innovative policies that will turn around the Nigerian health sector and improve the nation’s poor health indices.

He also promised to reverse the brain drain currently being experienced in the nation’s health sector.

‘Hold us firmly to account’

Tinubu, in his acceptance speech, encouraged Nigerians to hold him and the Vice President-Elect, Kashim Shettima, to account.

‘Hold us firmly to account, but please give us a chance first. Together, we shall build a brighter and more productive society for today, tomorrow and for years to come’, he said.

Development Diaries, therefore, urge Nigerians to take note of all campaign promises made by the president-elect and hold him accountable.
