Tunisia: Jerbi Calls for More Women Representation

The President of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT), Radhia Jerbi, has called on the Prime Minister-designate, Hichem Mechichi, to strengthen the representation of women in the line-up of the next government, especially in the sovereignty ministries.

Development Diaries gathered that this call was made at a meeting with Mechichi during the consultations for the formation of the government.

It was noted that President Kais Saied had handed over a mission letter instructing Mechichi to form the new government within a maximum of one month.

Jerbi, then, advised the authorities against limiting the presence of women to ‘stereotypical ministries’, and ‘to break with this tradition’. She added that the meeting was also an opportunity to review the concerns of national women’s organisations and to seek their views on the next government.

She said that she was counting on Mechichi’s understanding of this call – providing for broad participation of women in the next composition of the government – not only at the head of the sovereignty ministries but in all decision-making positions.
