European Union (EU) has provided medical equipment worth €13 million to the government of Tunisia through the Essaha Aziza programme.
Essaha Aziza, which means ‘precious health’, is aimed at improving the access and quality of primary health care services and the governance and management of health services at the regional and local level.
This aid consists of a 193 vehicles, including four-axle ambulances and ambulances type one and two for 995 public health facilities in 13 governorates.
There are also 88 multipurpose vehicles and 13 four-wheel-drive cars to transport nursing and medical monitoring teams to basic health care centres in remote areas.
Tunisia’s Health Minister, Faouzi Mehdi, said the equipment will enhance frontline health care services in the 13 target regions under Essaha Aziza programme.
For his part, EU Ambassador to Tunisia, Marcus Cornaro, said the overall cost of Essaha Aziza programme amounts to €20,500 million.
An extra €50 million, according to the union, will be allocated to the programme, starting from 2022.
The European body said priority regions will be the recipients of basic health care services in connection to maternal and child health, preventive health care and Covid-19 vaccination.
The programme is being implemented in Jendouba, el Kef, Siliana, Kasserine, Sidi Bouzid, Gafsa, Gabes, Kébili, Medenine, Tunis, Mannouba, and Ariana.
