Theirworld, JA Africa to Empower 500 Schoolgirls

Theirworld has announced a partnership with JA Africa to equip girls in Zambia and Zimbabwe to become entrepreneurs and community leaders.

Development Diaries reports that the partnership, through a project tagged ‘JA Rise Up Girls’ is planned ahead of World Youth Skills Day on 15 July.

Theirworld, in a statement, said its partnership with JA Africa is to empower 500 schoolgirls aged 13 to 19 in the countries through entrepreneurship education.

It noted that giving girls the practical skills and mindset to succeed as entrepreneurs and leaders can transform their lives and their communities.

A report by African Impact reveals that only 31 percent of females have completed primary school and only eight percent have completed secondary school.

The report noted that traditionally in Zambia, females are expected to be homemakers, mothers, and wives.

According to the statement, the project seeks to teach students how businesses work and about critical thinking, problem-solving, financial literacy and effective communication.

The organisation also noted that the girls will be coached by professionals, who volunteer their time, and the girls would work in teams to come up with their own business ideas that fill a gap in the market or address a community need.

‘I am incredibly excited about this partnership with Theirworld. Together, we will empower African girls, unlocking their potential as future entrepreneurs and leaders’, CEO of JA Africa, Simi Nwogugu, said.

‘By equipping them with the necessary skills and mindset, we are building a solid foundation for their success and contribution to society’.

For his part, Theirworld President, Justin van Fleet, said, ‘We are delighted to be joining forces with JA Africa to empower girls in Africa to become the business leaders of the future’.

She said by by equipping girls with vital business skills, as well as cultivating the professional skills needed in the workplace, they are giving girls the opportunity to thrive and become change-makers in their communities.
