The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) The Gambia has donated a consignment of nutrition supplies to the country’s Ministry of Health.
It is understood that UNICEF and the ministry partnered to combat malnutrition in children through the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) programme.
The Minister of Health, Dr Ahmadou Samateh, who received the donation thanked UNICEF for their continued partnership with the ministry.
He said, ‘Under my leadership, I will ensure that a conducive environment is always created for this relationship to excel from strength to strength.
‘My ministry will continue to provide the commitment and required human and technical resources to ensure that the gains registered by the IMAM programme are sustained’.
Also speaking, Director of Health Promotion and Education at the ministry, Modou Njai, commended UNICEF The Gambia for their long-standing partnership.
Njai spoke highly of the successes registered so far with projects supported by UNICEF under his directorate.
‘Among those were the successful implementation of the establishment of village support groups in non-primary health care villages for the implementation of community-based nutrition education and WASH through SBCC in West Coast, Central and Upper River regions of The Gambia’, he said.
For his part, new UNICEF country representative in The Gambia, Louis commented, said the UN agency will continue to provide humanitarian and developmental aid to children in the country.
