Sabally Leadership Academy (SLA), a youth empowerment foundation established in 2015 with the aim of educating, instructing and inspiring youths for self-fulfilment and positive contributions towards community development and national progress is set to launch an awareness and community support initiative dubbed ‘Kick out [Covid-19] Initiative’.

With the Covid-19 pandemic now in all countries, SLA has conducted awareness programmes on handwashing and physical distancing as well as handing out donations of detergents and food items to organisations like The Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH), the Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital (TTPH), and individuals.

The President and founder of SLA, Momodou Sabally, stated, ‘The next stage of our intervention will entail a stepping up of our sensitisation programmes and the designation of physical distancing [a]mbassadors to spread the message on the need to give space and protect our communities from…further transmission of [Covid-19]’.

It was noted that SLA’s musical outfit, SLA Cultural Choir (SLACC) was also going to shoot and launch a music video in line with the sensitisation programme on social distancing. Members of the choir have already been designated as the initial cohort of the SLA Physical Distancing Ambassadors, tasked with disseminating messages about handwashing and physical distancing.

SLACC is an initiative geared towards reclaiming the glory of African culture and using it to educate and inspire people. Within two years of its establishment, SLACC has already gone mainstream with hit performances on regular platforms in the Gambian music scene. The choir had its debut at the popular Open Mic Festival in 2018 and also took a lead role in the entertainment segment of the royal banquet held in honour of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall during their visit to The Gambia in November 2018.
