The Gambia: Nurses Bantaba Provides Medical Aid

A foundation, Nurses Bantaba, has donated medical items worth more than D160,000 to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia.

The foundation said it donated the items, including bed sheets, urine bags, wheelchairs and soft leather pillows, to complement the efforts of government in ensuring quality health care delivery.

The Gambia’s health sector is understood to have over the years been under great pressure due to high population growth rate, inadequate financial and logistic support, and shortage of adequately trained health personnel, according to the Global Health Workforce Alliance.

Development Diaries understands that The Gambia’s National Health Sector Strategic Plan 2014–2020 (NHSSP) guides health care in the nation with the aim of reducing inequalities in health care services and reverse the downward trend in health-related outcome indicators.

The Vice President of Nurses Bantaba, Sheikh Hatab Tamba, who donated the items, acknowledged that the health sector was a very challenging sector for governments around the world.

‘It therefore calls for concerted effort by government, NGOs and even individuals as the sustainability of quality health care remains key’, Tamba said.

‘We are known for taking care of patients 24 hours and now we are stretching our love and passion for our profession and our beloved nation by sharing with humanity for a quality health care delivery’.

Tamba called on the government to improve the working systems of nurses and other health care workers.

Deputy Chief Medical Director at EFSTH, Dr Charles Roberts, said they welcome whatever support to help boost service delivery at the hospital, while the Chief Matron at the hospital, Horeja Saine, thanked Nurses Bantaba for the kind gesture.
