The Gambia Malaysia Students and Alumni Foundation (GAMSA) has donated 70,000 dalasi to Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) to provide humanitarian aid to needy citizens.
The foundation also donated D30,000 dalasi worth of sanitary items to the country’s prison services.
Development Diaries gathered that the donations were made at the GRCS headquarters in Kanifing.
Almost half of The Gambia’s two million population live below the poverty line, according to UNDP.
With the Covid-19 outbreak creating an even more turbulent economic environment, many more people find it difficult to secure jobs.
GAMSA President Yankuba Mambureh said the adverse impact of the pandemic on The Gambia Prison Services prompted the foundation to make the donations.
‘The donation is timely and the donors are one of the many private donations that the Covid-19 respond team has received in The Gambia’, National Covid-19 Response Coordinator, Yaya Sanyang, said.
For his part, GRCS Secretary General, Alasan Senghore, thanked the donors for considering GRCS as a beneficiary, describing the gesture as big and significant.
He said, ‘It is important that we look externally but also internally, and as Gambians how can we continue to help each other’?
