Tanzania: Zanzibar NGOs Urged to Discuss Bill

Registrar of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Zanzibar, Ahmed Khalid, has called on members to submit their ‘NGOs Policy and Bill’ suggestions.

Khalid made this call during the opening of stakeholders’ workshop on policy and law in the semi-autonomous region of Tanzania.

The main objective of the planned reforms is to guide the over 2,300 registered NGOs to improve performance.

‘Read, understand and give your opinion for consideration in the proposed NGOs law and policy in the pipeline for improvement’, he said.

Khalid noted that the plan to improve policy and law confirms government recognises the role of NGOs in Zanzibar’s development.

He said, ‘Since we recognise you, we want to have serious NGOs in the country, because it is important to have NGOs that can make a difference and support the government’s development agenda’.

It is understood that NGOs in Zanzibar are engaged in democracy, good governance, anti-corruption, health, women’s rights, children’s rights, the environment, media, and development.
