Tanzania: Government Pledges Support for CSOs

The Registrar of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Tanzania, Vickness Mayao, has acknowledged the contribution of civil society to national development.

Addressing development stakeholders at the launch of the 2021 CSO Week in the country, Mayao assured CSOs of her office’s commitment to support their development efforts.

The CSO Week, themed ‘CSOs’ contribution to the national development’, is scheduled for 23 to 29 October.

The event, which is the largest gathering of civil society organisations in the country, offers an opportunity for state and non-state actors to engage and foster partnerships in the interest of national development.

‘I would like to assure you that the office of the registrar will continue to foster collaboration with CSOs to facilitate the sector’s growth’, Mayao said.

She encouraged NGOs to participate fully in the CSO Week and take advantage of the event to engage with high-level government officials, development actors and stakeholders.

‘Opportunities for discussions with CSOs have contributed to strengthened relations between CSOs and government through the office of the registrar’, she added.

‘Partnership through the registrar’s office has greatly contributed to close relations between CSOs and the government’.

The CSO week is expected to feature many activities aimed at amplifying collaboration between private and public sector actors.

The Executive Director of Foundation for Civil Society (FCS), Francis Kiwanga, acknowledged the close partnership with the government and other CSOs since the inception of the CSO Week.

‘The achievement of the CSO Week is due to strategic partnerships. The development agenda is not the sole responsibility of the government alone’, he said.

‘We cannot attain development if citizens are spectators. it [is] important that citizens participate in national development and this is in line with the sustainable development goals to leave no behind’.

It is understood that exhibitions designed to deepen public access and linkages to CSOs, development workshops, plenary, award ceremony and several networking events with government officials are all lined up for the week.
