In the rebel-held area of Kauda, Sudan, the UN’s children agency (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) recently distributed education supplies that will allow 800 children resume their schooling.

It has been observed that since the conflict began, over a decade ago, many children have been out of school and are in dire need of assistance. Therefore, in the coming months, UNICEF and its partners have plans to scale up humanitarian assistance in the newly-accessible areas of South Kordofan, including Kauda, through cross-border convoys with supplies from South Sudan. One of the focal areas for assistance is education, which is the priority for the community in Kauda.

UNICEF has plans to distribute school kits, as well as toys and games, to more than 6,000 students. The school kits will consist of essential learning supplies, including a notebook, pencils and colouring pencils. UNICEF will also be providing teaching material and textbooks to be used in the schools.

Given the importance of education, UNICEF will be working with the federal and state Ministries of Education to ensure long-term quality education services are established in the area, ensuring a smooth process of education for children in the area.
