Sudan: Responding to Cholera, Dengue Outbreaks

Cholera and Dengue Outbreak

While a resolution has yet to be reached on the conflict in Sudan, the outbreaks of cholera and dengue fever in the country are becoming a humanitarian crisis.

Development Diaries reports that more than 100 people have died since August 2023 from the outbreaks, according to the country’s health ministry, as a total of 1,049 cases of cholera have been recorded in Khartoum, Al-Jazira and Gedaref States.

It is understood that nine states have recorded cases of mosquito-borne dengue, with 49 deaths from a total of 3,316 cases.

Gedaref state, which borders Ethiopia, reported 2,152 cases with 33 deaths.

Since the war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) started in mid-April, nearly 7.1 million people have been internally displaced within the country, according to the International Organisation Migration (IOM).

This has led to millions being put at risk as displacement camps increase the risks of outbreaks, rights violations, and death as they lack adequate facilities to cater to the needs of the displaced.

About 70 percent of hospitals in the country are also out of service due to the violence, with most of them running low on medicines and doctors fleeing the country for safety.

The conflict must come to an end to allow a thorough intervention to address the health and humanitarian crises.

Development Diaries calls on all parties to the conflict to settle their differences at the negotiation table to prevent the further decline of the humanitarian situation in the country.

We also call on the Sudanese Health Ministry to, as a matter of urgency, implement health intervention programmes to address the growing needs of the displaced population.
