South Africa: Amahlongwa Youths Gain Job Skills

Some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have partnered with Vulamehlo Social Development Service Office to share skills-development knowledge with youths in Amahlongwa South Africa.

Development Diaries reports that the programme was conducted to empower unemployed youths who were there to seek advice and knowledge, network, and source ways they could develop themselves for the future.

According to reports, the supporting partners were given a platform to present business and cooperative registration and advice, skills development training, funding and donations, health, and reproductive issues, gender-based violence, women’s rights, as well as drug and substance abuse awareness.

Data from Stats SA shows that South Africa’s unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2023 was 32.9 percent, and is among the highest in the world.

A practitioner with Vulamehlo Social Development Service Office, Sanele Mokgothu, said the programme was in response to an appeal made by youths of Amahlongwa.

‘Amahlongwa has a high unemployment rate, and the youth indicated they are lacking in knowledge when it comes to work skills and which avenues to follow when seeking jobs or starting a business’, Rising Sun quoted her as saying.

‘The programme is in response to the Imbizo IDP roadshow held early this year at ward 16, where youths expressed that they need such programmes, and we decided to listen and forge partnerships with relevant stakeholders to share what they can with the youth of Amahlongwa’.
