South Africa: NA Hosts More Online Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) has increased the number of daily meetings it hosts online in response to the challenge of Covid-19. NA is a nonprofit fellowship focused on recovering addicts around the world. It facilitates regularly meetings in which recovering addicts help each other stay clean. The NA programme is based on a 12-step journey, which has proven life changing for many. The NA message is a simple one: an addict – any addict – can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use drugs and find a new way to live.

In a statement announcing the increase in the number of daily meetings, the organisation said, ‘Narcotics Anonymous is pleased to announce it has expanded its NA online meetings programme to [ten] meetings each day of the week. This helps ensure every addict, and every person who feels they may have a drug problem can attend a daily [meeting]’. The organisation said that its online meetings are reaching communities and individuals in South Africa’s remote regions, many of whom have never attended a face-to-face NA meeting.

The organisation also noted that its online platform has provided for the inclusion and participation of people from a number of countries across Africa. ‘For many of these countries, Narcotics Anonymous meetings are very new, but the accessibility provided by online meetings is making an enormous difference to NA members in other African states. It has become common practice for existing face-to-face meetings in remote areas to access an online meeting, and thus benefit from seasoned NA members with decades of recovery’, the organisation stated.
