The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has conducted business training for 52 Somalian migrants in Hargeisa, Somalia.
The IOM said the migrants who benefited from the European Union (EU) and IOM joint initiative were recent returnees from Libya.
‘52 migrants who returned recently from Libya with the support of EU-IOM joint initiative completed the Generate Your Business Idea Training in [Hargeisa] last month’, IOM said in a tweet.
‘The trainees are now able to start their businesses thanks to the grant received by the project’.
Over the last 30 years, hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somalia because of political instability and a dangerous civil war that broke out in the 1990s.
According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), over 750,000 Somali refugees remain in neighbouring countries, and over 2.6 million Somalis are internally displaced in Somalia.
Extreme flash flooding and riverine flooding in the southern regions of Somalia have also displaced over 650,000 Somalis in first eight months of 2020, worsening the migrant situation in the country.
A report on the business environment in Somalia shows that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are an important part of Somalia’s business environment.
World Bank data also shows that the unemployment rate in Somalia for 2020 was at 19.7 percent.
The EU-IOM joint training is expected to help the returnees start up their own businesses and earn income.
