What: #YouthEndFGM Virtual Conference
When: 14 February, 2023
Where: Online
YouthHubAfrica, in commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), will be hosting the #YouthEndFGM Virtual Conference.
Development Diaries reports that the virtual conference will be a platform to mobilise young people to continue to take the lead and engage other young people to use their social media platforms to accelerate actions to eliminate FGM in Africa by 2030.
According to the organisers, the conference is designed to also bring together young people and critical stakeholders to engage and consider collaboration while sharing best practices, lessons learnt, innovative ideas and forging familiar work principles and partnerships on eliminating FGM in Africa.
Available data shows that nearly 20 million girls and women have experienced FGM in Nigeria, and the conference is aimed at addressing the issue.
Nigeria signed the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill into law in May 2015. However, not all the 36 states that make up Africa’s most populous nation have adopted the VAPP law.
The VAPP law makes FGM and other forms of gender-based violence like rape, spousal battery, forceful ejection from home, harmful widowhood practices punishable offences.
The conference, it is understood, will bring together social innovators, advocates, stakeholders and young persons passionate about ending FGM to discuss effective strategies for ending this practice.
