Passport Delivery Promise: Interior Minister Must Not Fail Nigerians

When will Nigerians begin having their passports delivered to their homes, offices, and other locations of their choice, as promised by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo?

Development Diaries reports that Tunji-Ojo promised Nigerians in November 2023 that the recently introduced passport automation process meant that Nigerians would not need to wait longer than two weeks before they get their passport.

He also said that citizens will have their passports delivered to their homes, offices, and other locations of their choice by February 2024.

The month of February is here, and it is important to remind the minister of his promise, which we are hopeful he will fulfil.

According to an investigative report by This Day, Nigerians seeking to renew their expiring international passports or obtain new passports may have encountered additional difficulties as a result of the recently implemented passport automation applicant processes.

Are there concerns that the minister is not aware of? Is there information the public should be aware of?

There have been previous failed promises by the ministry to address issues tied to passport applications; hence, Tunji-Ojo has a compelling reason to fulfil his obligations, since doing so will uphold accountability and build trust.

Ministers need to follow through on their commitments so that citizens are more likely to perceive the government as accountable and responsive to their needs.

While the issue of citizens’ distrust in governance remains a concern, public officers must fulfill their commitments to maintain the people’s confidence.

Development Diaries calls on the minister to ensure that his promise of a smooth and quick passport application process does not just end up as a failed promise. We also urge Nigerians to follow up with the minister on his promise.
