Nine Social Etiquettes to Observe

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, etiquette means the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life.

There are various types of etiquette – social etiquette, meeting etiquette, corporate etiquette, bathroom etiquette, business etiquette, eating etiquette, telephone etiquette.

For the purpose of this article, we will look at basic social etiquette. Why are etiquettes important?

Etiquettes simply show that we have respect for other people; it makes people comfortable around us and helps us handle some life situations.

It is important to follow social etiquette in order to co-exist with other humans.

Here are some social etiquettes to observe while amongst family, friends, in social gatherings or in public spaces generally.

Say thank you: It can only be described as good manners to say ‘thank you’ to someone who has been kind to you or who has come to your aid in one way or another.

Observe self-control: When in the company of people, it is important to be on your best behavior by keeping your voice, manner and facial expression in check.

Pay attention to your words: The tone of your voice and being too loud about your accomplishments are things one should be aware of.

‘Excuse me’: Saying ‘excuse me’ after sneezing in a public place can also be identified as good social etiquette. Also, saying excuse me while trying to make your way through a crowd, instead of pushing people to make your way.

Name remembrance: Remembering people’s names; because this makes people feel good.

Pay attention: Do not interrupt someone mid-sentence, and try to listen respectfully

Make eye contact: When having conversations, make eye contacts as this creates a level of trust and confidence.

Be punctual: Try to arrive on time for events, dates, get-together, because showing up late can seem rude.

Limit phone usage: It is important to limit your phone usage when you are out with friends and family; pick only important calls and do not get carried away on social media.

Having good social etiquette creates a good impression and makes it easy to build and maintain connections.

As you bear all of these in mind, remember that the smallest act can make the biggest difference.
