Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Tuesday 27th May, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. The Guardian: Children’s Day: Tackle Bullying, Prioritise Rights, Welfare, Stakeholders Urge Government

As Nigeria joins in the celebration of this year’s Children’s Day, stakeholders have called on the federal government to prioritise the rights and welfare of children in the country.

Our Take: The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, through its Child Development Department, must take decisive action to safeguard the rights and welfare of Nigerian children by implementing and enforcing comprehensive anti-bullying policies in schools, strengthening child protection systems, and ensuring access to psychosocial support for affected children. In line with its mandate, the Ministry should also lead sustained public awareness campaigns and work collaboratively with education and justice stakeholders to create safe, inclusive environments where every child can thrive free from fear, abuse, or neglect.

2. Daily Trust: 42 Killed in Fresh Benue Attacks

At least 42 people have reportedly been killed in a renewed armed invasion on four communities in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents said on Monday that seven people were severely injured while two others were kidnapped following the renewed attacks carried out by armed invaders in the Gwer West rural communities between Saturday and Sunday.

Our Take: One would think that after years of recurring attacks, the lives of citizens in Benue State would matter enough to trigger proactive security measures, but alas, here we are again, counting bodies and burying dreams. The Federal Government, alongside the Benue State Government and security agencies, must finally rise to the occasion, not with empty condemnations. It is time to prove that ‘protecting lives and property’ is more than just a catchy slogan.

3. The Sun: Federal Government Inagurates Committee to Plan, Dispose Recovered 753 Housing Estates

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has inaugurated the Ministerial Committee on Technical Assessment, Completion Planning, and Disposal Strategy for 753-units Housing Estate.

Dangiwa while inaugurating the committee, on Monday in Abuja, said the estate was recently recovered and handed over to the Ministry by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Our Take: With Nigeria’s housing deficit still looming at crisis levels, Minister Dangiwa must ensure that the recovered 753-unit estate is not lost to another round of bureaucratic gymnastics or insider allocations disguised as ‘transparent’ processes. This committee must move beyond fine speeches and swiftly deliver affordable, livable homes that serve the very Nigerians left out of the housing equation for decades, especially low-income earners, young families, and vulnerable groups. Let this not become another ‘monument to potential’ but a working model of how public assets can be transformed into real, functional relief for citizens who are tired of renting hope.
