Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Tuesday 26th August, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. Daily Trust: Federal Government Issues Fresh Flood Alert to Nine Northern States

The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW Center) has issued another flood warning alert to Adamawa and eight other states in the North.

A circular signed by the Director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, in Abuja, on Monday, stated that following their locations, certain northern settlements were likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025.

Our Take: State governments in the affected northern states must treat this flood alert as a call to roll up their sleeves, not just roll out statements, by activating local emergency response teams, clearing drainage systems, providing temporary shelters. After all, when the rain comes, it won’t be Abuja’s circular that keeps people dry, but the real preparedness of their own state authorities.

2. The Guardian: Tinubu Seeks Stronger Nigeria-Brazil Ties, Inks BASA Deal

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, arrived in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, with a call for renewed diplomatic and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the South American country.

In a post via his official X handle, Tinubu described his meeting with the Brazilian leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as a renewal of the ‘historic relationship’ between both nations.

Our Take: President Tinubu should seize this visit not just for the handshakes, photo ops, and red carpets, but to return with binding deals that Nigerians can actually point to beyond hashtags.

We urge the president to ensure that the renewed Nigeria-Brazil ties don’t end up as another ‘historic friendship’ filed away in speeches but as real opportunities that put food on the table, lights in our homes, and jobs in people’s hands.

3. Punch: Despite FG’s promise, Ekiti, Ondo Federal Roads Still Impassable

Residents and transporters are groaning over the deplorable state of the Ado–Ijan–Iluomoba–Ikare Road, a federal road in Ekiti State that links major educational institutions, the state’s cargo airport, and key investment corridors.

Our Take: Dear Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, it is time to move beyond promises and press briefings to actual bulldozers and asphalt on the Ado–Ijan–Iluomoba–Ikare Road, as every day of inaction deepens the suffering of commuters, damages vehicles, and stalls economic activities. Roads don’t get fixed by presidential approvals or ministerial visits alone, unless, of course, Abuja has discovered a new miracle where potholes fill themselves after repeated press statements.
