Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Friday 5th September, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. Punch: Federal Government Seeks Fresh $1.75 Billion World Bank Loan

The federal government plans to increase its borrowing despite a significant 40.5 per cent surge in revenue for the first eight months of 2025, despite an earlier claim by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja that Nigeria had met its revenue target for 2025 ahead of schedule and would no longer rely on borrowing to fund its budget.

Our Take: We urge President Bola Tinubu to explain to Nigerians why, after boasting that the country had already met its 2025 revenue target ahead of schedule, his administration is now chasing a fresh $1.75bn loan from the World Bank. If revenues are truly pouring in as claimed, this constant borrowing begins to look less like economic strategy and more like a compulsive shopping habit charged to Nigeria’s already maxed-out credit card.

2. Daily Trust: Farmlands, Homes Destroyed as Flood Takes over Seven Communities in Taraba

A torrential downpour has triggered fresh flooding in Taraba State, submerging more communities along the River Benue.

Daily Trust reports that several farmlands and residential buildings have been inundated and hundreds of residents displaced.

Our Take: We urge the Taraba State government, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other relevant authorities to swiftly move beyond press statements and photo-ops by mobilising real relief materials, providing safe shelter for displaced families, and finally investing in long-term flood control along the River Benue, so that communities are not left treating annual floods as part of their cultural festivals.

3. CBN Replacing Civil Servants with APC Members as LG Accounts’ Signatories, Says Osun ALGON

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of colluding with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to illegally open bank accounts in the names of local governments.

Our Take: We call on the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, to immediately order a thorough and transparent investigation into this grave allegation, hold all culpable officers accountable, and restore the integrity of local government financial management in Osun State to prevent further abuse of public funds.
