Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Friday 1st August, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. Daily Trust: 34 Million Nigerians at Risk of Hunger as UN Food Aid Ends

About 1.4 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in northeastern Nigeria are at the risk of starvation following the withdrawal of humanitarian funding by the United Nations (UN).

Our Take: Wecall on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit to take immediate, coordinated action to prevent a national hunger crisis. With 34.7 million Nigerians, especially 1.4 million displaced persons in the northeast at risk of severe food insecurity, the federal government must mobilise emergency food assistance, scale up agricultural support to vulnerable communities, and engage international partners to bridge the humanitarian funding gap before the crisis worsens.

2. ThisDayLive: NEC Targets Economic Stimulus for Over 8.8 Million People in 8,809 Wards Across Nigeria

The federal government yesterday unveiled plans to roll out targeted economic stimulus aimed at improving the livelihoods of more than 8.8 million Nigerians spread across the country’s 8,809 electoral wards nationwide.

Our Take: As the federal government rolls out this initiative, we call on the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, state governors and local government authorities to ensure the initiative is implemented with full transparency, community involvement, and independent monitoring. To truly deliver impact at the grassroots, funds must reach the intended beneficiaries, project outcomes must be tracked publicly, and citizens must have access to feedback and grievance mechanisms in every ward.

3. The Guardian: Tinubu Rallies Governors to Drive Reform Gains Despite Hardship, Discontent in States

Amid biting hardship and economic stress occasioned by the rising cost of living nationwide, President Bola Tinubu yesterday convened a special session of the National Economic Council (NEC) in Abuja, where he urged governors to deepen collaboration with the federal government to ensure that the economic reforms currently underway translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians at the grassroots level.

Our Take: In light of the growing economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians, we call on President Tinubu and state governors to match reform rhetoric with real action by prioritising the needs of citizens over luxury spending. State governments must immediately halt extravagant projects and redirect resources toward critical areas such as food security, healthcare, education, and job creation. As President Tinubu rallies governors for deeper collaboration, this must be anchored on transparency, fiscal discipline, and people-centred governance to ensure that ongoing reforms truly deliver relief and meaningful development at the grassroots.
