Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Friday 13th June, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. Punch: Democracy Day Fireworks: Tinubu, Opposition Trade Blows

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with the Peoples Democratic Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, criticised President Bola Tinubu over his remarks expressing satisfaction at the prospect of a divided opposition.

During his address to a joint session of the National Assembly and Nigerians in commemoration of Democracy Day, President Tinubu stated that it was a pleasure to watch the opposition in disarray and had no intention of helping them put their house in order.

Our Take: President Bola Tinubu must rise above partisan jibes and demonstrate statesmanship by focusing on uniting the country, strengthening democratic institutions, and addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigerians.  At a time when citizens are demanding responsive governance, the president’s energy is best channelled towards fostering inclusive dialogue, upholding democratic values, and ensuring that all voices, including those in opposition, are respected and heard in the spirit of true democracy.

2. The Guardian: President, Nigerians Differ on Progress, Impact, 32 Years After

While addressing a combined sitting of the two chambers of Nigeria’s National Assembly, President Tinubu tried to paint glossy pictures of how democracy has grown in leaps and bounds in the country. Detailing his sacrifices and contribution to the growth of democracy, the president used the opportunity to distance his administration from accusations of state capture and plots for a one-party state.

Our Take: President Tinubu must go beyond rhetoric and commit to delivering tangible democratic dividends by prioritising policies that alleviate hardship, restore public trust, and uphold the freedoms that 12 June symbolises. Rather than defending his government against criticism, he should listen to the growing discontent, engage transparently with citizens, and demonstrate through action, not words, that his administration is focused on inclusive governance, not political domination.
