Nigerian Newspapers: Key Advocacy Calls | Tuesday 1st April, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines with our advocacy calls for Tuesday, 01 April, 2025.

1. ‘Eid-el-fitr: Low key celebrations as Nigerians lament hardship’ – Punch

Many Muslims had a low-key Eid-el-Fitr celebration following the growing cost of living, which made it difficult for many to celebrate in their usual style.

Our Take: President Bola Tinubu must take urgent and decisive action to address the worsening economic hardship and insecurity that have dampened the spirit of celebrations across the country. The soaring cost of living, rising food and fuel prices, and persistent security challenges have left many Nigerians struggling to meet their basic needs. As citizens grapple with these difficulties, we call on the President to strengthen economic policies that reduce inflation, and prioritise security reforms to restore hope and stability for all Nigerians.

2. ‘Mob beats suspected burglar to death’ – The Guardian

A suspected burglar has been beaten to death by some angry mob at Adzata community in Kurudu ward of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Our Take: Jungle justice is a dangerous and unlawful act that undermines the rule of law and threatens societal order. The brutal killing of the suspected burglar in Adzata community is unacceptable, and we call on the FCT Police Command to swiftly investigate this incident and bring those responsible to justice. We also urge citizens to report suspected criminals to the appropriate authorities and allow the justice system to take its course, as mob actions only breed more violence and lawlessness in our communities.

3. ‘Uromi: Residents desert towns over fears of reprisal, arrest’ – Vanguard

Communities around Old Ilushi Road, Opere, and Good Will Junction in Uromi, Edo State, have been deserted by residents for fear of reprisals and arrests by security agents, following the lynching of 16 travellers by a mob in the area last Thursday.

Our Take: While efforts to bring those responsible for the lynching to justice are necessary, security operatives must ensure that their actions do not instill fear or lead to indiscriminate arrests. We call on the Edo State government and security authorities to restore calm, uphold human rights, and guarantee the safety of law-abiding residents, ensuring that no one is punished unjustly in the pursuit of justice.
