Nigerian Newspapers: Key Advocacy Calls | Thursday 20th March, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines with our advocacy calls for today, 20 March, 2025.

1. ‘Fuel price may rise as naira-for-crude deal stalls’ – Daily Trust

Barring any last-minute intervention by the federal government, fuel price may rise as the Dangote Petroleum Refinery on Wednesday announced suspension of sales of products in naira.

The implication of this announcement from Dangote, according to experts, will be an increase in PMS price in days to come unless the government intervenes.

Our Take: The federal government must act swiftly to prevent a potential surge in fuel prices by intervening to extend the naira-for-crude arrangement.

2. ‘Many feared dead, cars burnt as tanker explosion rocks Abuja’ – The Guardian

An unconfirmed number of persons were killed last night, with many others sustaining various degrees of injuries following a massive explosion that occurred around the Karu bridge on the Abuja-Keffi expressway, cutting off the ever-busy road in the Federal Capital Territory.

Our Take: The tragic explosion is yet another wake-up call for stricter regulations on tankers plying our roads. How many more lives must be lost before authorities enforce mandatory safety checks, proper driver training, and strict monitoring of hazardous cargo transportation? The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) must enforce stringent policies to ensure that only well-maintained tankers, operated by competent drivers, are allowed on our highways.

3. ‘Emergency rule in Rivers: Federal government, governors disagree’ –  Vanguard

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said yesterday the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, played no role in the political crisis in River State, which resulted in President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on Tuesday.

Our Take: We reiterate our call to the National Assembly to reject the unconstitutional move by Mr President, in order to protect the people of Rivers State and to preserve democracy across the federation.
