The Zamfara Social Protection Platform (ZSPP) has commended the government of Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, for approving the state social protection policy.
The state executive council also approved the formation of the state social protection council and directed the budget ministry to come up with an implementation framework.
Development Diaries understands that 73.98 percent of the Zamfara population live in poverty, according to poverty and inequality data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Meanwhile, the ZSPP Chairman, Nasiru Biyabiki, is optimistic that the social protection policy would help in reducing poverty in the state.
‘We thank all the stakeholders who worked day and night to ensure the realisation of the policy from zero draft to where we are today’, a statement from ZSPP read.
‘It is our ardent prayer that this milestone will be one of the sources of having a better society much focused on dousing the poverty level and bridging the gap between vulnerable groups and mainstream society in the state’.
He also appreciated the contributions of Save the Children International (SCI), officials of the budget and economic planning ministry, and other key stakeholders who worked towards the actualision of the policy.
ZSPP, which comprises civil society organisations (CSOs) and media professionals, promote concept of protecting and helping the poor and vulnerable people in the state.
