Yiaga Africa has conducted training for a team of observers to observe the preparatory activities of stakeholders ahead of the 2022 Osun State governorship election.
The nonprofit, in a statement, said the July 16 election provides an opportunity for an assessment of the implementation of the new electoral act ahead of the 2023 general election.
The observers, who are part of Yiaga Africa’s Watching the Vote (WTV) movement, will also be observing the political and security environment of the state, Development Diaries understands.
‘For #OsunDecides2022, Yiaga Africa Citizen observers will observe and report issues relating to hate speech, intimidation and harassment of any electoral stakeholder, women, youth and persons with disability and attacks on media or INEC officials’, Yiaga Africa tweeted.
‘Ahead of #OsunDecides2022, Yiaga Africa’s #WatchingTheVote Long Term Observers have been also trained to track, monitor and report incidents of violence that may impact the elections across all the 30 LGAs of Osun State.
‘Violence monitoring will enable Yiaga Africa’s #WatchingTheVote to track early warning signs and escalate as necessary to prevent incidents that can hinder the successful conduct of the elections.
‘WatchingTheVote pre-election observation ahead of #OsunDecides2022 includes observing efforts by election stakeholders in educating and mobilising voters ahead of the election to improve on the low turnout recorded in 2018′.
Through its WTV movement, the organisation deploys the Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) methodology to verify the official election results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
PVT is an advanced election observation methodology that employs well-established statistical principles and sophisticated information technologies in elections.
