The recent bid to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria with the introduction of a Social Media Bill on the floor of the senate has generated a lot of controversies. Many media houses and social media users have kicked against the bill. The consensus is that the bill will deprive citizens of their freedom of speech and expression.
The Executive Director of Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA Africa), Samson Itodo, shared his concern over the proposed legislation at the public hearing that was held at the National Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria. Itodo rejected the bill saying, ‘Civil society organisations are using social media to provide accurate information on the electoral process, thus regulating social media will further reduce the credibility of elections’.
