Nigeria: Yiaga Addresses Youth, Women Concerns

Yiaga Africa has called for the inclusion of youths and women in the constitution amendment process to address issues affecting them.

Yiaga Africa Director Programme, Cynthia Mbamalu, made the call at the ‘Young Parliamentarian Forum (YPF) National Strategy Meeting on Youth Development’.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamiala, Chairman of the YPF, Hon. Kabir Tukura, and the national assembly clerk attended the meeting.

According to Mbamalu, the #EndSARS movement has shown the need for young people to be represented in government.

Protests, with hashtag #EndSARS, were triggered by the killing of young Nigerians by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The police unit, which has been disbanded by the Nigerian government, had long been accused of harassment, unlawful arrests, torture and killings.

‘There is no better time than now to partner with the national assembly on how some of their demands can become implemented as we come together to build our nation where young people can feel they belong as equal partners in the development of our country, Nigeria’, she said.

‘We are glad that the speaker is here. Mr Speaker, sir, young people are looking forth towards the constitution amendment process that produces reviews to the constitution for more youth inclusion’.

Mbamalu urged the House of Representatives to ensure all victims of police brutality and human rights violation during the #EndSARS protest are fully compensated.
