Women Connect Initiative (WCI) and the Gender Policy Unit at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have commended the Kudan local government for passing a by-law to enhance and sustain Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) for women and girls.
The by-law was passed following the Advocacy for Compulsory Technical and Vocational Education (ACTIVE 4 Rural Women) project led by WCI and the Gender Policy Unit with support from RiseUp.
The advocacy project was initiated after Gender Economic Index Report in 2016 revealed that rural women and girls in Kaduna State were the most economically disadvantaged group, especially in the Kudan local government area.
The by-law aims to ensure budgetary allocations for technical and vocational education for women and girls in communities.
Speaker of the legislative council, Habibu Danlami, told newsmen that the law was long overdue considering the need to formally position Kudan girls and women in the frontline of entrepreneurial development in Kaduna State.
‘The passage of the by-law is consistent with the plan of the Governor Ahmed Nasir El-Rufai’s government to ensure compulsory education for girls’, Danlami said.
He also said, ‘We are aware that the world is moving fast and away from conventional learning environment. We do not want to be left behind.
‘We want to build the capacity of our women to help us grow our local economy and state’.
WCI Director of Programmes, Victor Ihidero, called on other local government legislators in Kaduna State to emulate Kudan, stressing that the world was moving towards production economy.
He thanked the local government for listening to the voices of women and ensuring that there was a specific by-law to promote sustainable livelihood for rural women.
On his part, the Programme Officer of ABU’s Gender Policy Unit, Elisha Timothy, said, ‘Girls and women shall have access to the TVE centre in their ward or centres closest to them without intimidation and discrimination.
‘Girls and Women should also have access to the TVE centre anytime agreed upon by the community-based women group.
‘It further provides that the local government council shall work with civil society groups and the Gender Policy Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria to monitor and evaluate TVE-related activities for girls/women in Kudan local government’.
