Nigeria: Rotary Promotes Sustainable Environment

Rotary International, through the Rotary Club Ikoyi Metro, and the Nigerian Conservative Foundation (NCF), in a bid to solve the coastal erosion problem in Lagos State, have jointly engaged in tree planting and beach cleanup at the Alpha Beach.

Development Diaries understands that NCF, in a statement, said over 500 seedlings of coconut trees were planted along the seashore to mitigate the effects of sea surge which constantly washes off the sand at the beach.

The NCF Director of Technical Programme, Dr Joseph Onoja, in his remarks, said it had been discovered through satellite imagery that some communities, including a road network located originally at the beach, have been washed off due to rising water level in the last 15 years.

Onoja, who urged stakeholders to salvage the situation, said, ‘In 2018, NCF conducted research that revealed that if drastic actions are not taken, most coastal areas of Lagos will be submerged into the water by the year 2050.

‘We are happy the government has continued to put groins in place which were part of our recommendations’.

The President of Rotary Club, Delight Sunday, who expressed her excitement over the opportunity to provide solutions to the environmental challenges of the people, appreciated NCF for its partnership and effort in tacking the challenge.

A committee made up of representatives of NCF, Rotary Club Ikoyi Metro, and RI D9110 has been created to help strengthen the partnership.
