Nigeria: Rights Activist Esther Uzoma Dies

Human rights activist and convener of Civil Society Situation Room in Nigeria, Esther Uzoma, has died.

Situation Room, which is a platform of civil society organisations (CSOs) working on elections, good governance and other issues in Nigeria, announced the demise of Uzoma in a statement on 07 January.

The prominent Nigerian lawyer and staunch advocate for women’s rights died on Wednesday, 06 January, 2021, following a surgery at a hospital in Abuja, according to the statement.

‘Esther was very energetic and a committed human rights and gender activist and has been in the forefront of driving Nigeria’s democratic reforms’, the statement read.

‘She will be sorely missed by all who came in contact with her’.

Uzoma, fondly called ‘lady comrade’, attended Township Primary School, Aba, Abia State, and later proceeded to Girls’ Secondary Commercial School also in Aba.

She proceeded to Alvan Ikoku College of Education to study English, and later attended Imo State University, where she bagged her LL.B. in 2002.

Uzoma, renowned for her quest for justice for women’s rights, was called to the Nigerian Bar after finishing from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja.
