Nigeria: One Africa Recognises PPDC’s Civic Effort

The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) has won the One Africa Award prize of US$100,000.

Development Diaries understands that the One Africa Prize Award recognises African-driven and African-led advocacy efforts that have demonstrated success at the community, national or regional levels.

The award, which was designed to celebrate African efforts aimed at achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs), also rewards the exceptional work of organisations founded by Africans based in Africa.

‘After a public vote, we are delighted to announce that this year’s winner of the award is the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC)’, ONE Africa Award said in a message on its website.

Chief Executive Officer of PPDC, Nkemdilim Ilo, said in a statement that she was grateful to the award organisers for recognising the work that civil society organisations do.

‘PPDC will utilise the received funds to increase the impact with citizens and the government to bring about transparency in governance’, she said.

‘The organisation also plans to improve the open contracting implementation process currently in Nigeria and several other countries in Africa.

‘PPDC is honoured to be the 2020 recipient of this prestigious award. We see it as a validation of over 16 years of work we have put in to ensure that citizens, especially the youth, women, digitally disadvantaged [people], participate in governance and have access to timely and usable information to be able to hold their leaders accountable’.

PPDC is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that increases citizens’ participation in governance processes.
