The Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO) has lauded the national assembly (NASS) for including the suggestions of the civil society community in the recently reviewed and passed Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

Development Diaries understands that the new CAMA, especially the Part F, will strengthen the transparency and accountability of the non-profit sector in Nigeria.

The NNNGO had urged the NASS to take active legislative actions towards reviewing the Part C of the CAMA as part of the government’s agenda on the ease of doing business.

The network, through its Executive Director, Oyebisi B. Oluseyi, expressed gratitude to the 660 nonprofits for voluntarily providing input into the review held between 2017 and 2018.

Oluseyi further commended the eighth and the ninth assemblies for paying attention to the non-profit community’s concerns and for capturing their inputs.

He said, ‘We are honoured that our suggestions on common seal, classification of associations, qualification of trustees, accounting records and annual returns are included in the new law.

‘As a network, we appreciate the opportunity to raise critical regulatory issues as we continue to work toward advancing the operations of nonprofits in Nigeria.

‘We now look forward to working with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and other non-profit stakeholders to help eliminate roadblocks to implementing the CAMA Act 2020 so that nonprofits can continue to deliver essential support to communities across the country’.

The NNNGO is a network dedicated to improving the operational environment for nonprofits, bringing together more than 2,700 nonprofits in Nigeria focused on education, health, environment, gender, agriculture, social protection, youth, poverty, good governance and other areas to promote national development.
