Nigeria: ISD Calls for CSO Support

Innovative Solutions to Community Development Initiative (ISD) has appealed to the Nigerian government to intensify its support for community service organisations tackling social vices in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of ISD, Abdulmajeed Yakubu, made the appeal during a skill acquisition graduation ceremony organised for adolescents.

He said that the government needed to step up its support for citizens as non-indigenous organisations commit their efforts towards empowering needy people in society.

Development Diaries learnt that, ISD, since its formation in 2013, has been catering to the needs of numerous vulnerable members of society.

‘We are calling on government agencies to come and support every other community service organisation implementing projects in communities across states in Nigeria’, he added.

‘If the people supporting us can go as far as coming to our country to support such ventures, then, our government should be able to do better for the citizens towards empowering them so as to curb all social vices evident in the society’.

With the skill acquisition training, aimed at building resilience in children to enable them to address basic household needs, Yakubu said he was optimistic that the children will be too occupied to indulge in criminal activities.

‘What we are looking at is a situation where every household will be able to provide for themselves without external support from outsiders’, he added.

‘In the long run, we will curb any form of violence arising as a result of street hawking and other activities that could subject children to harm’.

The Social Welfare Officer of Karu local government council, Jibrin Alhassan, commended ISD for taking its intervention to local communities where they are most needed.

Jibrin said, ‘What they are doing in Karu local government is in different shapes – they are into schools, block grants and skill acquisitions.

‘They came to Karu LGC about six years ago and they are doing a lot.

‘They are the only CSO serving in Karu local government now presently with IHVN, and they are doing a lot’.

The beneficiaries of the training, who received certificates, expressed gratitude while promising to utilise the knowledge to improve their lives as they also received starter kits to enable them to get started in their respective fields.
