With leading international academics paying tribute to Thandika Mkandawire, who died 27 March, 2020, in Stockholm, Sweden, Jibrin Ibrahim has also penned a moving tribute to the Malawian development economist. Ibrahim is a professor of Political Science and a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Abuja, Nigeria.
Thandika Mkandawire was Professor of African Development at the London School of Economics and was also a widely published scholar on the social sciences in Africa. His mentorship meant a lot to many young Africanists and development practitioners. Ibrahim, in a social media post, said, ‘Thandika Mkandawire was a great economist and social scientist. His true greatness however was spending 40 years of his life training and inspiring younger intellectuals to develop a critical mind’.
