The European Union (EU), in partnership with Plan International, has provided livelihood support to 1,370 young people affected by the insurgency in northeast Nigeria.

As part of the support for response, recovery and resilience of people affected by the insurgency, the EU donated livelihood kits to youths for baking and tailoring.

Development Diaries gathered that the items distributed included tailoring kit, food processing kit, baking kit, kit for salons and groundnut oil processing kit.

The over a decade insurgency has resulted in food insecurity, severe malnutrition, and the loss of livelihoods.

More than two million people, including around 150,000 elderlies, are displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In addition, more than five million people in northeast Nigeria risk acute hunger in the upcoming lean season because of escalating conflict and livelihood disruptions due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Speaking in Maiduguri, the state capital, Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement, Abbah Yusuf, commended the EU and its partner for their commitment towards building the resilience of the people.

Also speaking, the EU Coordination Team Leader, Kabiru Abass, disclosed that the union was supporting 21 out of 27 local governments in the states.

‘We are here to support the programmes of the government in helping vulnerable people in their various communities. Plan International led consortium is one of the 15 interventions of the EU in Borno state’, EU Coordination Team Leader in Nigeria, Kabiru Abbass, said.
