Nigeria: CSACEFA Offers UBEC Grant Advice

Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) has urged the government of Kwara State, northcentral Nigeria, to ensure proper utilisation of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grant.

The N7.1 million grant is an accumulation of grants that were not accessed by the state from 2014 to 2019 after it failed to provide its counterpart fund.

The UBEC grant is meant for the rehabilitation of dilapidated basic schools, construction of new ones, equipment of the schools with ICT tools, training of teachers, and project evaluation, among other purposes contained in the UBEC workplan.

CSACEFA, in a statement, applauded the current administration of the state for providing the required funds needed to access the grant.

‘We equally sincerely believe that the current government will not fall into the unfortunate but clearly avoidable recklessness and pitfall of the immediate past’, the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Fatimah Ahmed, has said that the funds will be monitored by UBEC to ensure the state complies with the workplan it submitted to access the grant.

‘This money would be spent in phases over the next two years to fix up to 600 elementary schools out of the over 1400 decrepit basic education facilities across the state’, Ahmed said.

‘The projects would be monitored by UBEC to ensure compliance with the workplan submitted by the government’.
