The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has expressed its concern over the dangerous effects of corruption and bad governance in Nigeria.
Development Diaries gathered that the Executive Director of the centre, Comrade Zikirullahi Ibrahim, who addressed journalists in Abuja, said, ‘As a platform of active citizens working to promote democracy, human rights, and accountable governance, it is part of our responsibility to provide perspectives about the most fundamental concerns of citizens concerning how the democratic and governance processes affect them’.
He also condemned the federal government’s plans to hike electricity tariffs, increase the fares for train services, and impose a six percent stamp duty for transactions relating to rent payments.
‘Where countries which care for citizens are giving stimulus packages to help citizens cope with the harsh economic environment, Nigeria’s ruling elite failed to take up the responsibility of supporting the people at such a critical time’, Ibrahim added.
‘The so-called palliatives programme of the government was a colossal failure, as the palliatives were again hijacked by the usual suspects, mainly political actors and their cronies’.
He also knocked state governments for not living up to expectations, even as he argued that the central government had lost its way as regards the anti-corruption fight.
