Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called for the immediate audit of polling units in Ekiti and Osun states, southwest Nigeria.
The nonprofit made the call at a strategy meeting organised by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room to discuss and agree on strategies for the 2022 governorship elections in the states.
The audit of polling units, according to CAPPA, will help to ascertain the level of preparedness or otherwise of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the governorship polls.
Whilst the Ekiti State election will take place on 18 June, 2022, that of Osun State is scheduled to hold on 16 July, 2022, as announced by INEC.
‘[INEC] must invest more in mass sensitisation and make clear her procedures for allotting voters to the newly created polling units in the two states’, CAPPA said in a tweet.
‘We welcomed the use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the last FCT elections and called for more capacity building for its handlers’.
CAPPA also expressed its readiness to conduct training for journalists in election coverage skills as the media has key roles to play in shaping narratives.
Development Diaries gathered that CAPPA also joined other civil society organisations (CSOs) in the drafting of strategic action plans for elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
