Nigeria: BAN Faults Police for Stopping Meeting

Brothers Across Nigeria (BAN) has faulted the Nigerian police for preventing the nonprofit from holding its General Assembly at Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, Delta State.

President of BAN, Lewsi Aitufe, told newsmen that the action by the police was illegal and an infringement on the fundamental human rights of citizens as stated in Section 40 of the Nigerian constitution.

Aitufe said that prior to gathering for the meeting, the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Hafiz Inuwa, and the Director of SSS, where duly notified through a letter dated 18 August, and submitted to the Ughelli Area Commander, the DPO and duly acknowledged by the police.

Aitufe also told journalists that BAN had in 2018 obtained a court ruling against the Nigerian police in a suit No. A/M/97/2018 refraining the police from interfering in any of the group’s activities.

He also said, ‘With the above response and considering the huge resources that have been invested, we approached the High Court, Effurun Delta State, for a court injunction in a suit No. EHC/M/77/2020, restraining the police from interfering in the activities of the Brothers Across Nigeria (BAN)…

‘With the above court injunction, the legal department of the body was directed to write to the Inspector General of Police and also serve him the court order.

‘The IGP responded by asking the group to liaise with the CP Delta, and equally grant our request’, he said.

Aitufe also presented a memo signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, which read, ‘I am to confirm that the Inspector General of Police has instructed the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, to handle your request.

‘You may wish to liaise with him, accordingly. Kindly accept the assurance of the highest regards of the Inspector General of Police’.

On his part, Inuwa said, ‘We had intelligence, and based on insecurity report, we are stopping it’.
