Alheri Centre for Women and Child Care Development (ACWCCD) has called on women in Taraba State, northeast Nigeria, to ‘be careful who they leave their children with’.
Director of ACWCCD, Eglah Ibrahim, made the call during a training on child care in Jalingo, the state capital.
It was gathered that the women are members of the Kauna Village Savings and Loans Association and Saint Justina’s women group.
Development Diaries learnt that the non-governmental organisation (NGO) carried out the training following reports that the number of rape cases in the country had gone up.
The Nigerian police recorded 717 rape cases between January and May, according to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu.
The police boss had called on Nigerians to join in efforts to tackle rape and other sexual violence by ensuring prompt report of cases.
As for the ACWCCD director, she urged the aforementioned women to always monitor their children.
‘Parents should be careful who they leave their children with – always monitor them. I want to say it clearly that family and close relations should not be taken for granted’, she said.
‘The testing and treatment of malaria, as well as distribution of mosquito nests to both pregnant and nursing mothers, is what we intend to do periodically. I urge you to make good use of the items’.
