60Plus Advocacy Initiative has provided two shuttle tricycles to the Geriatric Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos State, Nigeria.
Development Diaries gathered that the tricycles were provided as part of the organisation’s activities marking the 2021 International Day of Older Persons.
Approximately 9.3 million elderly people aged 60 and above live in Nigeria, according to data from the National Population Commission (NPC).
The Chairman of 60Plus Advocacy Initiative, Yinka Obalade, in a statement, said creating public awareness on matters of the elderly people would improve their quality of living.
‘The move, designed to ameliorate the intra-community mobility plight of the older persons in the LASUTH community, is one of the many ways that the advocacy initiative seeks to support the elderly in the society’, the statement read.
‘In promoting the collective interest of senior citizens’ rights in Nigeria, we are lending our voices to the matters that will improve the quality of living of the elderly people.
‘The initiative has embarked on a number of projects that have since advanced the cause of creating recognition and respect for the rights of older citizens.
‘Championing campaigns against discriminations and abuse of the senior citizen on grounds of age, we have developed suitable training programmes and trained volunteers who are willing to serve as caregivers for the senior citizens’.
