1Child 1Book, a Non Governmental Organisation in Nigeria achieved a milestone this week when it gained partnership with the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos.

‘This is particularly special as we reach a milestone next week, witnessing the graduation of 350 primary school children we have worked with in the last three years. We are extremely proud of their achievements so far,’ says Project Lead at 1Child 1Book, Tosin Jegede.

This week, the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos donated storybooks to 1Child1Book and hosted public school children who have little access to books. The children at the book presentation were two public schools in Lagos – UPE Primary School, Festac, Amuwo Odofin and Hope Children’s School in Ikoyi.

Other people present at the event were Primary 6 teacher UPE Primary School Festac, Mrs Gladys Akpobure; Volunteer – Victoria Akpan; Trustee, Tosin Jegede Foundation, Miss Kemi Ehuriah;  BHC’s Blessing Erivona and BHC’s Wale Adebajo.

The Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Ray Kyles, expressed his interest in the work of 1Child1Book and read to the children.

He also spoke about the importance of reading and literacy and shared a story about his own sons who he said loves to encourage them to read.

The British Deputy High Commission said “children in Nigeria need to have access to books and stressed the importance of literacy for building future skills.”

The Staff of the British Deputy High Commission Lagos, Nigeria also donated 500 books, which will be distributed to children in the 15 schools we have worked with. The books donated are from Nigerian publishers Kachifo Limited.

1Child 1Book is an educational initiative of Tosin Jegede Foundation with a goal to provide a storybook for every child who cannot afford one starting in Lagos State, Nigeria. The organisation aims to improve literacy in Nigeria.
