National Assembly: Akpabio, Abbas Make Promises

The newly inaugurated leaders of the National Assembly have affirmed their commitment to carrying out their legislative duties for the good of the Nigerian people.

Development Diaries reports that Godswill Akpabio and Tajudeen Abbas were on Tuesday, 13 June, elected Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.

Senator Akpabio assured that he will discharge his responsibilities with utmost dedication and fairness.

‘Together, we shall reach and surpass the expectations of the Nigerian people regarding us, and our roles in building a better, safer, more inclusive, prosperous, efficient and ethical country’, he said.

He further promised to continue where the ninth Senate stopped in giving attention to bills that address matters on gender, disability, youth empowerment, revenue generation and sustainable development.

‘Government is a continuum and the Senate is no less so. We shall, therefore, further strengthen the legislative space in continuation of the laudable efforts made by the ninth Senate under the able leadership of Senator Ahmed Lawan’, he said.

For the Speaker, he promised that under his leadership, the house will introduce reforms and innovations to the benefit of Nigerians.

‘We shall introduce reforms and innovations for the benefit of Nigerians. In a few weeks, we shall be reeling out the legislative agenda that will shape the tenth House of Representatives, he promised.

‘We shall work closely and inter-dependently with the executive and judiciary to give Nigerians the good governance they deserve. We stand at a crucial juncture in our nation’s history, where challenges abound, but so do opportunities.

‘We will champion legislation that will uplift the lives of our fellow citizens, promote social justice, and drive sustainable development’.

Development Diaries calls on the current leadership of the National Assembly to stay true to their promises and ensure they make laws that would benefit the masses.

We call on Nigerians, too, to monitor the activities of their various representatives at the National Assembly and ensure they hold them accountable.
